Dragino WSS-24 Rain & Snow Detection Sensor (RS485)

The Dragino WSS-24 is an RS485 rain and snow detection sensor designed for weather stations, smart agriculture, industrial automation and environmental monitoring applications.

Unlike traditional rain gauges that measure rainfall volume, the WSS-24 detects the presence or absence of rain and snow, providing a clear precipitation detection status to a connected monitoring system.

The sensor features a specially designed detection grid with an automatic heating function, helping dry the sensing surface and improve operation in wet, humid and cold conditions.

Its sensing electrodes feature ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold) surface treatment, providing improved resistance to corrosion and supporting reliable operation in outdoor environments.

The RS485 communication interface allows the WSS-24 to connect to compatible industrial controllers, PLCs, data loggers and weather station systems.

For wireless monitoring through a LoRaWAN network, the sensor can be connected to a compatible controller, such as the Dragino WSC2-L Weather Station Controller, which collects the sensor status and transmits it over LoRaWAN.

The WSS-24 is particularly useful in applications where detecting the start or presence of precipitation is more important than measuring accumulated rainfall. These include agricultural automation, weather monitoring, building management and remote infrastructure monitoring.

When connected to a suitable monitoring platform, rain or snow detection events can be recorded and used to trigger alerts or automated actions.

With its automatic heating grid, corrosion-resistant sensing surface and RS485 connectivity, the Dragino WSS-24 provides a practical solution for precipitation detection in connected environmental monitoring systems.

Important: The WSS-24 is not a rain gauge and does not measure rainfall volume in millimetres or snow depth. It detects rain/snow presence. It is also not a standalone LoRaWAN device; LoRaWAN connectivity requires a compatible external controller.
